Weekly Wishes 17: Moving

If you missed my post on Saturday, then you might not know that I'm moving! After being offered my first full-time job, I started scouring the Internet for apartments since I will be moving about an hour and a half away. Saturday was spent in my own version of a House Hunters episode (complete with a lunch to discuss all the options), and that afternoon I signed a lease. So in the next week or two I need to:

1. Buy an entire apartment's worth of furniture and kitchen supplies. The positives of living in campus housing in school is I didn't have to deal with moving furniture or signing a lease throughout the summer. So I am starting from scratch, with is both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. As someone who has a difficult time deciding which restaurant to eat dinner at, you can only imagine me in a furniture store with rows of sofas, tables and beds to choose from.

2. Pack up all of my clothes items that I moved into my parents house not too long ago. Remember when hanging pictures in my room was on my to-do list a few weeks ago? Yes, well now those are coming down along with everything in my closet that I just took time organizing.

3. Try and transport all of said clothes and items in my small hatchback. When it comes time to move (or when tall people have to sit in my backseat) I always wish that I had rethought getting a small car. Thankfully I have become an expert on getting as much as possible into the trunk/backseat area.

4. And finally, unpack and settle in. Hopefully all before my first day on the job. My Pinterest boards are finally going to be put to good use and eventually an apartment tour will be posted in the future.

Any helpful tips on moving/relocating are much appreciated, as well as decorating on a budget.

Purge through everything, I have done this now after finishing my Bachelors where I had a ton of things that I did not need. I then did this again when moving up to Indy for 5 months and I have gotten rid of so much stuff that really helped with moving and making it easier. Also I invested in those skinny hangers (25 for $12 at TJ Maxx), I then hung all my work/nice clothes up, Put a trash bag over to top of them and then moved them while all hanging up. Good luck with the move and the new job!

Wow, congrats!!! That's so exciting! And I'm also a huge fan of house hunters, so it sounds weirdly fun to me...even though I know when I go through it, it'll probably be a living hell. Glad you found a place so quickly and can't wait to see it!!!

I know right? I wish I could take credit for those lovely shoes.

thanks! it turns out that two of the places that were in my "top 3" turned out to be MAJOR duds, so it was more a matter of making sure i could afford the one i'm renting.

good to know! i did a good clean after graduation, but i'm sure i can find more to get rid of or leave at my parents house. i've seen the trash bag method of moving clothes and i can't wait to try it and save time having to fold everything and put it in suitcases.

I am so excited for you! I'm a junior in college and I'm constantly stressed about landing that first full time job. I just recently put down a deposit on my first apartment (that I'll live in by myself) for my senior year and I'm going through a lot of the same struggles of furnishing and purging. I have so much stuff to go through, it's not even funny. Haha. Best of luck!

Congrats on the first ever full time job. Super big deal. Do you have an ikea nearby? It helps ever so much with affordable decor. Also moving is such a great opportunity to start fresh. Plus, it helps keep clutter at bay. Anyhow, congrats again! Hope you have a great slash productive week.

Congrats on the new job & place. However you've got the closet organized, pack it up that way so you can reset it back up without having to reorganize it again. If you can't fit everything after another round of purging, take the most important stuff and return for the rest (or see if a parent will drive the rest over & help with setup). Check out resale shops / thrift stores (especially in high-end areas) for furniture and other home furnishings ... you might find some gems at a fraction of the price. About the only thing I'd be careful about purchasing used is upholstered items ... I've heard some horror stories about bedbugs!

Congratulations!!! Some tips: 1) Don't rush into buying new stuff for your place, aside from the necessities. You just might find something you'll like even more after a week or two. 2) Save all receipts, so you can always return if the rug is too small. 3) Ikea is my best friend. Try to go to the showroom and there's plenty of ideas. (I find better quality products than Target in terms of home furnishings and it's cheaper too) 4) If you have to pack up your old room, do so. Then you can slowly replace the old stuff with new stuff. Moving can be expensive and stressful but take your time and slowly, your new place will feel more like a home.

thanks for the closet trick, it worked like a charm. and since i was able to keep everything on hangers, it took half the time to move all my clothes.

but for real. i only brought with me everything i know i'll need. i should probably through the rest out, but it's still sitting in my parents house....oops.
